the present enveloping us

I love how differently time passes when you aren’t counting down to some event. And since I’m trying a new subtlety tack that’s all I’m going to say about that.

We’ve been hanging out with the people in our house more since Holly arrived. Last night we looked at Carola’s pictures of Patagonia for a long time, which was fine, it’s all very beautiful, but it got more interesting when she was showing us pictures of Valpariso and there was a mural featuring an oldish man in a suit she referred to as “my leader.” Then we got her to tell us the story of this leader and how he killed himself when the military staged its coup, and she was very serious about this history.

Now, I don’t know a lot about history in South America, but that sounded like the 1973ish coup. Allende and Pinochet such. The other 9/11. So I had to ask, “But this all happened before you were born right?” Of course it did. But it was interesting to hear her talk about this leader she never had as hers.

There was a lot more to the story, including cousins who’re rebels and uncles in the military. “We don’t talk very much about it because everyone has different opinions,” she said. It was fascinating. And something I wouldn’t have heard, had I been sitting in my room on the internet.

We’ve also been kind of awesomely domestic. The expense of things encourages it. I made a potato, chick pea and apple curry the other day. Holly’s made soup and white sauce for pasta, and a bunch of other stuff. We’re eating salad and drinking tea. We’re having pancakes on Saturday and then going bike shopping.

It’s pretty sweet being here/now.

hours of consciousness haven’t killed me yet

Tonight, after getting up at 6 this morning, having 6 hours of class and a meeting and biking a pile of kilometres, I’ve given up on schoolwork and am listening to baseball instead. Tuesdays are kind of tiring.

It was kind of frustrating to my schedule that in class today we were given an assignment due next Tuesday that won’t be graded but needs to be done, and requires printed stuff. Frustrating because I’d worked ahead to have everything ready to go for the other stuff due next week, since I’ll be in Winnipeg on the weekend. But as it stands now, I’ll have to do some work on Sunday. And come to school on Monday to print it out. Bah.

And you may remember how I was doing some volunteer work (cutting and pasting html code). The people I was doing that for decided to make up for their lack of organization that meant I couldn’t upload my files, they’d give me a new batch of files to do that would be due in four days. Which is bullshit, as I did the stuff way in advance and it took a long time. As the problems were not my fault and I’m not getting paid for my time there, I’m not going to worry about it.

So those are my gripes. They aren’t overwhelming. Baseball (and the hope I might see Halladay and Lincecum meet in the playoffs) is good. And soon I’ll be chatting with Holly, so my (very long) day will be made more than good indeed.

not terribly subtle, no

So this weekend I did a bunch of homework and saw a couple of Fringe plays. The Fringe here felt super expensive compared to Winnipeg. Many people I know here have been talking about how expensive food is here, but it’s plays and movies that I’m noticing. Because really, who eats?

Both plays were one-person shows. One was pretty good, the other was less so. The less good one was a performer I’m now convinced I saw at WInnipeg Fringe a couple of years ago. This performance was six or seven monologues in different characters. She started strong (“I will kick you in the box until you pass out and reach your weight loss goals!”) and ended strong (a sketch with only the words “Mom! Ice cream!”) but the middle was a whole lot of Mad TV reject material. The other play, When Harry Met Harry was good. A guy working in an office who had to go to an Interpersonal Skills seminar. Predictably he failed funnily but grew from it. The actor was really good though. The lighting cues were impeccable and really played well with his performance.

Today I bought a flashing red light for my back, so when I leave the house at my ungodly time in the morning tomorrow, traffic will be able to see me better. I don’t understand why we have 8am classes. We’re grad students. Why are we not starting at 10 or 11?

Tomorrow Holly flies back to China. Really that shouldn’t make that much of a difference to me, right? Talking on the phone/Skype isn’t terribly different if we’re across a continent or an ocean. I’m still not with her, which is where I want to be. 75 days.

best proselytizing ever

I biked to school today. It was not too terribly hellish with hills, so I’m not sure what that bodes for my ride home in a few hours. Now, when I say “not too terribly hellish” I mean there was only one hill I was ready to slit my belly on the side of the road to apologize to the universe for my failure to climb it but please please please I just want to die. And this is where the evangelists came in.

So there’s this two-stage hill climbing W 8th up to UBC. Two thirds of the way up there’s a church. As I climbed up to be level with the church there were three or four retirees with beards out standing and cheering their fool heads off. I saw the cyclist ahead of me give them a high five as he went by and I dragged my carcass along towards them. They had a table saying “St. Someone’s Juice Stand” and they weren’t just giving out high fives, but juice-boxes and granola bars wrapped in a little “Here’s what our church does” pamphlet. It was actually kind of awesome. They just come in when you’re at your weakest and give the weary traveller sustenance wrapped in an inoffensive (as in, no hellfire and damnation of nonbelievers) message. Pretty slick.

school’s in

And I’m back. At school. And the constant theme of the first day was “We don’t want to overwhelm you with information here…” so I ended up underwhelmed. I mean, it’s nice that they’re easing us into it. Hooray for not having a shit-tonne of stuff to do for tomorrow. But. I’ve been saving up my doing-stuff energy for being back at school. I’ve done one or fewer things per day for like the last four years, so I’m actually kind of ready to get shit happening. Holly’s on the other side of the continent (/planet in a couple of weeks) so I’m actually kind of okay with not having a life and being busy till December. That makes time pass faster, right?

Tomorrow I’ll bike to school for the first time. Hopefully my legs won’t give out completely. I figure it’ll be a month of feeling like shit and then I’ll be in somewhat of a groove and it’ll be not terrible (apart from the rain).

it’s the weekend

Yesterday I bought a bike. Which is kind of scary for me, because biking involves more physical activity than I prefer, but I also don’t like crowded buses. I hope I’ll be able to stick with it for getting to school and back. And that it won’t get stolen too quickly. It’s nice and light and simple and it’ll probably be good and healthy for me to ride more.

On Friday we had a “Meet your classmates” thing at a bar in Gastown (I will slowly internalize all the neighbourhood names so this city will make sense even if I’m not looking at a map). I had a good time. I didn’t meet many people because the people at the table where I first sat were pretty great so why go mingle? There were jokes about librarians/archivists as organizers and we talked about storytimes and I told people about my issues with the uninspiring administration of the Winnipeg Public Library system. (Although one of my classmates took years to get onto the on-call page list in the Portland Public Library, so yay WPL for having less demand for your jobs.)

My stuff hasn’t arrived from Winnipeg yet, but it isn’t too bad. I brought enough clothes with me to get through, although it means I’ll be wearing my patched, holey and comfortable jeans to school instead of my “nice” ones. I think I will survive without a public shaming.
